When Grief Changes the Landscape

Grief has a way of changing everything.

The world keeps moving. People go to work, make dinner, laugh at jokes, and talk about ordinary things. But when you’re grieving, life doesn’t feel ordinary anymore. Something—or someone—is missing, and suddenly the landscape of your life looks different.

Grief isn’t only about death, either.

We grieve relationships.

Dreams that didn’t happen.

Seasons that ended before we were ready.

The life we thought we would have.

Sometimes we even grieve who we used to be before something painful changed us.

And one of the hardest parts of grief...There is no timetable for it.

There may be days when you feel strong, followed by a day when a song, a photograph, a familiar smell, or an unexpected memory brings the ache rushing back.

That doesn’t mean you’re going backward.

It means you loved. It means it mattered.

Scripture never asks us to pretend that loss doesn’t hurt. Jesus Himself wept.

Psalm 34:18 tells us:

The LORD is near the brokenhearted; he saves those crushed in spirit.

Notice what God promises here. He doesn’t say, Hurry up and get over it.

He says He is near.

Sometimes healing begins not with understanding why something happened, but with discovering that God is willing to sit with us in the place where it hurts.

Like a lighthouse standing through the storm, His presence remains steady even when everything around us feels uncertain.

You may not be able to see very far ahead right now.

That’s okay.

A lighthouse doesn’t illuminate the entire ocean. It gives enough light to help you find your way through the darkness.

Hope doesn’t require you to minimize what you lost.

You can miss someone deeply and still believe God has more ahead for you.

You can mourn what was and slowly begin making room for what will be.

You can cry and still have faith.

Grief and hope can exist in the same heart.

And perhaps that is one of the quiet miracles of healing: discovering that although grief may become part of your story, it does not have to become the end of your story...

God is still writing.

So if today is a difficult day, you don't have to figure out the entire journey.

Just look for the next bit of light.

Take the next step.

And remember: even here, God is near.

In Christ,

Coach James
